In her work Kala Newman looks at society and the different layers
within it, where our perception is constantly influenced by our surroundings,
politics and the economy. With this world as a reflection field she creates
her own world and stories in which we take a step back from reality. “I challenge the
viewer to look at the world as if it is the first time they see it, using
imagery that might seem to be taken from the normal life but actually shows
odd “metaphysical” beings and situations.” Using this
absurd/playful language the viewer often enjoys the work but after looking
again you discover a more critical point of view. The way Kala’s
work comes together is very playful and with the use of cardboard and other
throwaway materials she elevates the status of the throwaway material by
pushing them in the art contest. Born in Maastricht, The Netherlands |
